Planning your photo shoot outfits for you, your family, and your wall.

You did it! You got all the kids smiling, and got through this photoshoot. You received your photo gallery and along with all the smiling faces...You have a big dinosaur on your little ones shirt saying rawr. You print that beautiful child and now their smile, and the big green dinosaur are part of your wall in your home forever! Dinosaurs are very cool. But do you really want this as part of your home? Ask yourself that question before choosing your colors, patterns, style and what you want to wear to your photo session.

Sometimes someone in the family can be super picky when it comes to what to wear. Sometimes people have issues with certain clothes. I put together this guide to help you find the best and easiest way to dress for your photoshoot.

What NOT to wear to your photo shoot

Shirts with large logos, graphics, or words. not only bring attention away from YOU and the backdrop, but can also date your images quite quickly. We don't want to see you in a sporty T shirt or cargo shorts, but we can find something in the middle. We want these photos to be timeless and to express your best self. That doesn't mean super fancy. But the term dress to impress can go far! When it comes to putting all the kids in the same outfit, I recommend it only when it is with very solid options like white tops, and light color bottoms.

Patterns

Having mom wear a beautiful softer patterned dress is enough! When two patterns are placed next to each other, they tend to compete, causing your eyes to look at them rather than at your beautiful face. Try to keep the patterns to a minimum, but if more than one pattern will be worn, put them together and see how much they clash. Please feel free to send me your options before your photo shoot and I can give you my professional opinion!

Accessories

I welcome the less is more approach, but a cute hat, beautiful bracelets, necklaces, nice watches can be something that gives your photo a stand out factor! I embrace these options, but try to keep it to a minimum. And remember, these are YOUR family photos. If your hat is going to be the stand out piece, make sure you really love it!

If you wear a head covering, I recommend a solid color over a pattern, or one with some shine. A patterned head cover can really take away from your beautiful face, but of course there can always be an exception to the rule, and please feel free to share your options with me! If the men of the family are wearing black suites and white shirts, I recommend everyone else wear something more on the fancier side, some patterns are added, and some pops of color!

When it comes to shoes, i recommend men wear closed toe shoes over sandals. If your kids don't have shoes to match their perfect outfits, don't worry. Just let me know, and I can suggest a friendly spot so that we can go barefoot! No shoes are better than old sneakers!

Pants are usually always better than shorts, not matter how warm out it is! Any kind of sleeve is also usually better than no sleeve!

My Personal Favorite

Also the easiest to coordinate, have everyone show up in white! This will work with almost every location, and give you a timeless beautiful style for your family photos.

For pants, keep to khakis, not jeans ( I actually really don't like blue jeans in photos, but thats just me.) For girls, you can all wear a different white dress, shirt, skirt, etc. I prefer you all wear something different and not the same, just keep it to white, cream, or beige.

The darker your clothing, the darker your photos will appear. The softer the color, the softer the photos. There are so many colors in the rainbow and I do encourage color! But lets go over some of my recommendations;

Warm or cool colors: I personally try to choose colors that are warmer tone, like yellow & orange, pink. Cool colors are blue, purple. My editing style personally if you hadn't already noticed, is more on the bright, sunshine, warm tone rather than blue, and edgy.  I do love blue in photos, but I do think it can be a pop of color, rather than everyone wearing it.

What you wear isn't the only color in your photos

The colors you choose matter. Love the bright and airy photo look? Me too! To ensure your photos will express the happiness your family shares, we want to choose happy, and light colors to wear. But you arn't the only color pop in your photos. The background and location you choose adds ALOT to your photo! Whether its some stone backgrounds, green trees, or a huge flower bush, these are all the elements that paint the colors in your photo. I tend to suggest my clients to keep their outfits more on the neutral end, and if they're looking for a pop of color we can use our surroundings.

Another good way to add a pop of color into your photos, is to express it with accessories or on your little kids!

See some color combo's I enjoy below, find your favorite and aim for that for your own photoshoot! Notice that multiple colors are being worn in each session, but the main or pop out color is the starting point to build off for your family outfits;
